We descend down either Platteklip Gorge (approximately 1 hr) or via the cable car (3 minutes) Climbing Table Mountain is popular amongst locals and tourists, and a number of trails of varying difficulty are available. The main vegetation of the mountain is the unique and rich Cape fynbos, estimated at 1,470 species of plants, amongst them many kinds of proteas. The most common animal on the mountain is the dassie, or rock hyrax. There are also porcupines, mongooses, snakes and tortoises. A reasonable level of fitness is required

• A water bottle
