Calabash Tours, started in 1997, is a small tour company dedicated to enriching cultural tourism that benefits disadvantaged communities and informs visitors. Calabash Tours is one of those small companies that started as an entrepreneurial dream, which became a reality through dedication, vision and commitment.

Originally the company consisted of a guest house and a cultural tour company. In 2005 they sold the Calabash Lodge, to grow and develop Calabash Tours into a market leader in Cultural tourism in the Eastern Cape.

To date, Calabash tours has hosted thousands of visitors to Port Elizabeth’s township areas and developed a core of quality staff from the communities. They have also created numerous opportunities for township residents to participate in the tourism industry and made a positive impact on hundreds of poor people’s lives. They demonstrate pro-poor tourism in action, with the Calabash Trust really making positive changes within the poorer communities.

Calabash is growing steadily as it takes ever more satisfied visitors on cultural day tours into the diverse and exciting township areas of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. The main aim of Calabash Tours is to ensure a greater level of social and economic justice in South Africa through sound cultural tours and fair trade tourism.
